 Airing of the Quilts

Ladies in pioneer days brought their beloved quilts across the country in covered wagons and lovingly cared for them as treasured possessions.  Each spring, the ladies would “air” their quilts in the sunshine following long winter days and lots of usage.

The practice of airing the quilts continues with the Airing of the Quilts  Quilt Show to be held Saturday, May 15th at historic sites in Greenwood, AR.   New quilts and antique quilts will be on display.  The quilt show is sponsored by the Alpha Delta Chapter of ESA with proceeds benefiting the South Sebastian County Historical Society.

The “Airing of the Quilts” hopes to:

Increase the public’s awareness and appreciation of the art of quilting

Increase the interest and support of the South Sebastian County Historical Society

Provide an encouraging environment for quilters to showcase and share their creative endeavors

In conjunction with the display of beautiful quilts at each location, there will be a tour of the Harper House, the Presbyterian Church, and the historical district surrounding the old jail museum. The tour will end at the Greenwood City Hall where more than 25 quilts will be on display.  There will be a silent auction in the Redwine School House and four quilt shops will be vending quilting supplies in the VFW Hall.   A wall quilt will be awarded during a drawing on the day of the Airing.

The Alpha Delta Chapter of ESA plans to make this an annual fund raiser to support the South Sebastian County Historical Society.

The tour begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Harper House on Main Street where refreshments will be served.  The next stop will be the Presbyterian Church which is on the historical registry and then advance to the Old Jail Museum area and City Hall.

Admission for the tour and quilt show is $5.00 and tickets can be purchased in advance from Alpha Delta or Historical Society Members.

If you have questions regarding the show, please call Kay Voss 479-883-0254 or Joyce Cormack 479-996-4474.
